Freshwater Pearl Earrings

If you don't know the difference between freshwater pearls and naturally created pearls, you aren't alone; neither do the bivalves that make them. The outermost surface of a cultured pearl is identical in every regard to naturally created pearls, so they have the same radiant lustre as their natural counterparts. The difference lies at the heart of the gem - and in its price. With new technology that allows a new creature to shoulder the pearl-making burden that used to belong to oysters alone, pearl farmers have made lustrous freshwater pearl earrings more accessible than ever.

When pearls came only from the sea, finding a matched set of them was vanishingly rare. Pearl farmers always knew that freshwater mussels produced lustrous pearls made from the same substance, nacre, that makes the gems so beautiful, but the mussels rarely performed this feat of transforming a fleck of sand into a magnificent jewel. Culturing pearls changed that and allowed perfectly matched pairs of freshwater pearl earrings to be made in a matter of months, not painstakingly paired after years of searching.

The nacre that gives pearls their subtle glow is only faintly translucent. If it were more translucent, it couldn't hide the cultured pearl seed. If it were opaque, pearls would lack their luminous beauty. Fortunately for oysters and humans, nacre is exactly translucent enough to conceal the heart of the pearl while still giving it the glow that lights up your face when you wear a pair of cultured freshwater pearl stud earrings.

Pearls occur in nature in a range of colours, but the most treasured gems were snowy white. White freshwater pearl earrings pick up the hues around them beautifully, transforming other colours to something purer and more radiant. As beautiful as they are, white pearl earrings are only one option; vary your pearl wardrobe with colours ranging from the palest rosy blush to the dark iridescence of Tahitian-style black pearls.

You no longer need to choose carefully between soft-spoken stud earrings, freshwater pearl drop earrings or dramatic chandelier earrings dripping with cultured freshwater pearls. Thanks to the pearl farmer's science and nature's art, you can have them all.
